Why Cycle Parking

Cycling to the station? You need parking when you get there. Birchwood near Warrington
Cyclists need somewhere safe to leave their bikes at the end of each journey. So, if any group from a local authority to a doctor’s surgery wants to do something for cycling then providing secure cycle parking is a good way to start. Ostensibly simple, it is easy to get wrong; but Transport Initiatives can help.
Best Practice

Cycling to school? You need parking when you get there. St Joseph’s, Stoke on Trent
Transport Initiatives has many years’ experience of all areas of cycle parking provision. We are well versed in what represents Best Practise. There are many different solutions depending on the length of stay, the need for all weather protection and the level of security. Perhaps you have luggage to store or maybe you have a non-standard cycle and need parking for that too.
Audits

Seaford, East Sussex
If you are a local authority and need to know how much public cycle parking is in your area and its quality and condition, then we can undertake a cycle parking audit. We’ve audited cycle parking in Hackney, Watford, Seaford, Southend, Southwark and the City of London. Naturally as part of this we can also tell you how well they are being used.
Cycle Parking Policy and Proposals

A proposed location on Uxbridge High Street
After finding out what cycle parking exists and how good it is, we can help local authorities work out what they need. We check fly-parking (a good indicator of need), we hunt sites and make detailed surveys. We’ve written strategies and proposed sites in Crawley, Croydon, Hackney, Hillingdon Kingston, Southwark and Watford.
Non-standard cycles?

A possible solution for a cargo cycle parking stand.
Non standard cycles are becoming more common. Tandems, cargobikes and tricycles are all longer than conventional cycles, wider or both. We’d recommend leaving extra space at the end of a row of ‘Sheffield’ stands for these bigger cycles but we’ve also designed stands and found locations specifically for adapted cycles and cargobikes at Cambridge University.
Residential Cycle Parking

A cycle hanger, Dennistoun, Glasgow
Some houses and flats are too small to adequately house bicycles. But it’s possible to provide secure parking on street in a cycle hanger. We’ve proposed hanger locations for West Yorkshire Combined Authority and produced a management model for hangers in Lambeth. We also produced residential cycle parking guidance for seven local authorities including TfL. The guidance also covers cycle storage within buildings.
